What Is This Course?  

This is an Applied Mathematics course for first year Engineering students.

Who Can Take This Course? 

First year Engineering students.

Lecture Information

Lecture Times: The course consists of approximately 75 lectures. This is equivalent to an average load of 3 hours per week over the academic year. Students are assigned to one of the tutorial times listed below.

Topics Covered

The course consists of a general introduction to applied mathematics. It is not assumed that you have already taken applied mathematics at school level. The following topics will be covered during the year. The approximate number of lectures for each topic is also shown.

Semester 1

• Vectors in 2 and 3 Dimensions.
• Kinematics in One Dimension. 
• Projectile Motion. 
• Relative Velocity.
• Newton’s Laws of Motion.
• Simple Harmonic Motion.

Semester 2

• Work, Power and Energy.
• Conservation of Momentum.
• Circular Motion and Angular Momentum.
• Rigid Body Motion.
• Centres of Mass. 
• Statics.

Continuous Assessment

There will be three multiple choice class tests held during the year. PLEASE NOTE: These tests contribute a total of 1/3 of your final grade in this course. The remaining 2/3 comes from the summer finals.
