No prior knowledge of Leaving Certificate Applied Mathematics is assumed. The course covers the application of mathematical techniques such as calculus and vectors in mechanics, population models, biological systems and other topics such as planetary motion and rigid body motion. The emphasis is very much on mathematical problem solving and applications rather than formal theorem proving.
Courses are offered at both Pass and Honours level.
Pass Level Courses.
Courses on Mechanics and Methods of Mathematical Physics are offered. The Department also shares a course in Numerical Analysis with the Mathematics Department. A subject entitled Applied Mathematical Science is also offered which consists of a choice of any two of a series of courses offered by the Departments of Mathematical Physics and Mathematics.Honours Level Courses.
Courses on Advanced Mechanics and Mathematical Methods of Mathematical Physics are offered.Courses offered in both third and fourth year include:
These courses are offered as part of various Bachelor of Science Degree (B.Sc. degree) programmes.
B.Sc. Degree Programmes
Mathematical Science (Honours). This is a Three Year Honours programme consisting of Mathematical Physics and Mathematics.
Applied Mathematics (Honours). This is a Four Year Honours programme consisting of Numerical Analysis, Mathematical Physics, Statistics, Mathematical Modelling etc.
B.Sc. (General). Mathematical Physics (Pass) may be taken as one subject in this degree.
Computing Studies (Mathematical Science/Computing). The Department has a major involvement in this B.Sc. degree at both General and Honours level.
Bíonn na cursaí seo ar fáil tré Ghaeilge; an cúrsa céadbhliana agus tuarim is leath de na cúrsaí i ngach bliain fhochóime ina dhiaidh sin.
