The Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM) is an international annual competition for undergraduates. Two teams of three students each are presented with a choice of two "real world" problems. Typically, one of these is discrete, the other continuous. The contest then begins at 12:01 am on a Friday morning and over the course of the next four days a mathematical model of the chosen problem is developed. A report is completed to be postmarked by 5:00 pm Monday.
Solutions are judged and ranked as Successful Participant, Honorable Mention, Meritorious, or Outstanding. All students who are successful participants or better receive a certificate; outstanding teams receive a bronze plaque and have their solution papers published in THE UMAP JOURNAL, which is published by COMAP. In addition, the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) each award cash prizes to one Outstanding Team from each problem. The teams designated by SIAM also receive partial expenses for a trip to the SIAM annual meeting.
The Department of Mathematical Physics at NUI Galway has been involved in MCM since 1991 with great success. The MCM has become a major event in the calendar at NUI Galway and there is strong competition for team selection every year.
