Matthew McCarthy earned a B.Sc. in Experimental and Mathematical Physics in 1960 and an M.Sc. in 1962 from University College Cork. He was awarded the Ph.D. in Theoretical Mechanics from the University of Nottingham in 1965 and was appointed lecturer in Mathematical Physics at University College Galway in January 1965. He was awarded the D.Sc. and was promoted to an associate professorship in 1973 and was elected to membership of the Royal Irish Academy in 1987. He has had visiting appointments at various institutions in the United States such as Princeton, The Johns Hopkins, The University of California at Berkeley and the University of Colorado and Los Alamos.
Research Interests: Mainly in the area of wave propagation in various media.
